Removal of links from search engines

How to Remove Links from Google and Yandex

Search engines, when indexing data on the internet, do not verify its accuracy and instead rely on technical parameters of a site's "authority." Manipulating these parameters allows malicious actors to promote defamatory information to top positions in search results for specific queries.

To remove links from search results, the most effective method is to delete the original content from the page the link points to. After that, the link will disappear from search results in a short time.

However, removing the original source is not always possible. In such cases, it is possible to remove the links from search results, so the original page remains accessible on the internet, but it cannot be found through search engines.

Direct Request

Google can remove certain information from search results at your request. You can submit a request to remove information from Google here. However, not all information can be removed. See the list of data categories that Google is willing to remove upon request.

Yandex provides only the URL removal tool, which allows you to speed up link removal from search results after the original content has been deleted.

Types of Data Google Will Remove

  • Your credit card numbers and images of your personal signature
Credit cards, bank account numbers, and other personal financial data. Scans of documents containing your signature.
  • Government-issued identification numbers
Social Security Number in the USA, Tax Identification Number in Argentina, Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas in Brazil, civil identification number in Korea, citizen ID card number in China. Formally, Russian SNILS and INN numbers fall under this criterion, but Google often refuses to remove them.
  • Your explicit photos
Photos and videos uploaded without your consent. To remove them, you will need to prove that the images feature you.
  • Images of minors in a sexual context
  • Content that infringes copyright
This applies only to materials that violate U.S. laws, e.g., DMCA.

What Google Will Not Remove

Any information that does not meet the criteria above is unlikely to be removed. Google may often refuse, even if the information falls under a removable category. In such cases, removal is possible only through the court.

  • Addresses, phone numbers, birth dates
Contact information, including that protected under personal data laws.
  • Non-explicit photographs
Any of your photos, including those uploaded without your consent.
  • Articles, images, videos
Any text or media information that does not meet the removal criteria.

Through the Court

Based on the "On Information" Law

Since 2015, amendments to the "On Information, Information Technologies, and Information Protection" law have been in effect. According to these amendments, search engine operators are required, at the request of an individual or by court decision, to remove from search results links to certain types of information:

  • Information that violates the laws of the Russian Federation
To remove it, the violation must be proven.
  • False or outdated information
Information that has lost relevance for the applicant due to subsequent events or actions. Justification of the falsehood or obsolescence of this information will be required.

Exceptions include information about events that involve criminally punishable actions, for which the statute of limitations has not expired, and information about a citizen committing a crime for which a conviction has not been expunged or pardoned.

We have experience successfully removing links from search engines such as Google, Yandex, and Mail.ru. Submit a request, and we will assess the possibility of removing your information.
